,What are nucleic acids?
They are molecules of life
They have the capacity to store information that controls cellular activity and the
development of an entire organism
They control the synthesis of protein: which make up much of the structure of the
body and enzymes are protein which control chemical processes inside cells
There are two types of nucleic acids in cells: Pg. 128

, STRUCTURE OF DNA
The shape of DNA is like a long, twisted ladder
The 2 strands twist to form a stable, 3D double helix
The outer two strands of the ladder are formed by a chain of sugar (S)/phosphate
(P) links that have strong bonds
The rungs are formed by pairs of bases linked by weak hydrogen bonds
The base pairs are attached to the sugar molecules: deoxyribose sugar (C5H10O4)
The nitrogenous bases are: Adenine (A) Guanine (G)
Thymine (T) Cytosine (C)
Adenine joins with Thymine with 2 hydrogen bonds
Guanine joins with Cytosine with 3 hydrogen bonds
