Unit 4 Assignment 4 Adrian-
You are a lab technician working in the development department for a pharmaceutical company that develops and
produces new drugs. The lab stores confidential information relating to drug development. It also stores personal
and confidential information relating to volunteers who are used for drug trials. Your manager has asked you to
produce a report evaluating the challenges in storing and communicating the range of information recorded and
processed within the laboratory, comparing the systems in the development laboratory to those in the company’s
manufacturing department.
You must write a report that:
Task A- Explains how useful scientific information is obtained from large data sets
Large data sheets are sets of data that can be from large surveys or from studies that contain
raw data. This is very important for scientists as they can use this when carrying out scientific
research. Organizations have their own policy on how their record will be kept. A lot of the
time, it will be stored on a file on a computer, or sometimes laboratories will have handwritten
data. Most of the time, these notes will eventually be added onto a computer for security. The
raw scientific data is then any samples of chemicals must be kept stored safety in the lab, all
labeled and any chemicals that leave the laboratory have to be booked and labelled so that
then they are used, they are signed out of storage. Large data sets are usually turned into
management system. An example of a management system is LIMS. LIMS (laboratory
information management system) is a software system used in the laboratory to add data
which keeps track of data associated with samples, experiments, laboratory workflows, and
instruments.
Task B- Explains how a workplace laboratory records and processes large data sets of scientific information (e.g.
booking, identification number, format, records) and the type of data collected (e.g. healthcare records)
Scientific data is very important data that is used for research and studying science. Every lab
experiment is an example of scientific data. This data must be stored safety. The head of
departments, such as health and safety, are responsible for keeping data recorded and
changing the data every time they need updating. COSHH records play a very important role in
processing large data sets of scientific information. The records that COSHH are in control of,
contain very important information on health and safety, and hazardous substances that are
kept in the workplace. This is really important as this data creates an awareness of the harmful
substances in the workplace. The head of the department will be able to access and make any
changes to the data if they need to. Data may be grouped into four main types based on
methods for collection: observational, experimental, simulation, and derived.
Observational data- Observational data is research that goes beyond numbers and statistics
This data is studying people in situations and settings to collect the data needed. Examples of
observational data collecting is by watching behavior, events, or taking notes on physical
characteristics in their natural setting. This data is useful as you can collect the data from a
physical first hand point of view.
, Experimental data- Experimental data is experiments carried out for scientists and researchers
to collect data. Experimental data is produced by a measurement, test method or an
experimental design. An example of experimental data is new drug trials. This works by giving
some patients a low dosage of the new drug, some patients a higher dosage and others a
placebo drug so scientists can analyze data through experiments.
Simulation data- Simulation data is computer-based surveys and questionnaires to collect data
and examine questions of interest. Simulation data i s the collection of input data, analysis of the
input data, and use of the analysis of the input data in the simulation model. Examples of
simulation data is weather forecasting, flight simulators used for training pilots, and car crash
modeling.
Derived data- Derived data is data collecting by using existing data to create new information.
For example, combining area and population data from the Twin Cities metro area to create
population density data.
These are the 4 main data types, however there are other types of scientific data. This data is
essential in a scientific workplace to ensure health and safety is in place, to know the level of
training and to keep a record of training required and completed by staff. These data types are-
COSHH records, scientific data, scientific apparatus, waste disposal, health and safety checks
and training records.
COSHH records- COSHH records are records that are stored in a laboratory. These records
contain data on how any substances are hazardous to a person’s health or environment and
also any records of incidents that involved chemicals causing harm to to the staff that work in
the laboratory. The reason COSHH records are stored is to make staff aware of the hazards and
health and safety measured when using and storing chemicals. If the records need changing or
updating, it is the stores technicians who have the role of storing and usage of substances.
Scientific data- Scientific data is any data that is used for scientific research, laboratory testing,
drug trials and general information. Scientific data is kept because is it very important for
understanding people’s bodies and behavior. If any of the data needs to be retrieved, they will
have that data stored away. If the records happen to need changing or updating, it is the role of
the head of the department. They have control of all of the scientific resources.
Scientific apparatus- Science apparatus is any science equipment and tools that are used by
professionals in the laboratory. This equipment can be things like test tubes, beakers,
thermometers, and flasks. Scientific apparel data is kept so that the staff know where the
equipment was brought from, how the equipment is used and any warning labels on the
packaging, so staff are aware of the health and safety procedures. It is the responsibility for the
head of department to keep these records in check and change any data to keep it all in check
and up to date.
Waste disposal- Waste disposal is collecting, processing, and disposing of waste materials.
Waste materials can be any unwanted materials- such as blood samples, semen samples, foods
