2026 Edexcel A Level Geography Paper 2 (9GE0/02) mark scheme (PDF): the official Edexcel (Pearson) marking guidance, so you can mark your attempt exactly the way an examiner would. QUICK ANSWER This file is the 2026 Edexcel (Pearson) mark scheme for Edexcel A Level Geography Paper 2. It shows what earns each mark, how marks are split inside a question, and the wording examiners accept. It is the mark scheme only - the question paper is a separate document. AT A GLANCE - Document type: mark scheme (PDF) - Exam board: Edexcel (Pearson) - Qualification: A Level Geography - Paper: 2 - Specification / paper code: 9GE0/02 - Exam series: 2026 - Not included: the question paper WHAT YOU GET - The complete 2026 mark scheme for A Level Geography Paper 2, as published by Edexcel (Pearson) - Question-by-question marking guidance, with the points that gain credit - A clean PDF that opens on phone, tablet and laptop, and prints on A4 WHY MARKING AGAINST THE SCHEME RAISES GRADES A paper only helps if you know what a full-mark answer looks like. Marking against the official scheme shows which points you missed, where your wording was too vague, and which topics keep costing you marks. That is far more reliable than judging your own work by feel. HOW TO USE IT (15 MINUTES) 1. Finish the paper first under timed conditions, with this file closed. 2. Mark each question strictly. Award a mark only where the scheme allows it. 3. Write the cause beside every lost mark: knowledge gap, misread question or weak explanation. 4. Pick your three biggest losses, revise them, and retry similar questions in a few days. BEST FOR - A Level Geography students marking mocks and past-paper attempts - Teachers and tutors who need a clear marking guide for feedback and homework - Resit and private candidates studying without a teacher FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is this document? ,General Marking Guidance

• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the
first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded
for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their
perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be
used appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners
should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the
mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the
candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles
by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme
to a candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it
with an alternative response.

, Explain one impact of the global shift on industrial regions in the developed world.
Question Mark
Answer
number
1(a) AO1 (4 marks)

Award 1 mark for one way in which the global shift of manufacturing has impacted
deindustrialised regions, with up to a further 3 marks for an explanation to a maximum of 4
marks.

For example:

• Many regions have experienced significant economic decline/ /deindustrialisation
(1), resulting in job losses/unemployment (1) leading to less disposable income (1)
creating a spiral of decline (1).
• The closure of factories has led to higher unemployment rates (1). Workers who
were previously employed in manufacturing often find it difficult to transition to
new industries (1), especially if they lack the necessary skills resulting in structural
unemployment (1). This means that are either forced to leave the area in search of
employment or take lower paid jobs in the area (1).
• Deindustrialised regions often face urban decay (1). Abandoned factories and
industrial sites can become derelict, leading to blight and a decline in property
values (1). This can also result in environmental issues, such as soil and water
contamination from old industrial materials (1). This is expense to remove by
remediation (1).
• The loss of manufacturing jobs can lead to various social challenges, including
increased poverty (1). Communities can struggle with these issues leading to rising
crime rates as people struggle to support their families (1). This is compounded by
a lack of government investment in these areas (1) resulting in areas experiencing
high levels of outward mobility (1).

If more than one way is given, credit the stronger one.

Accept any other appropriate response. (4)
