CPC Certified Professional Coder Certification
The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) is the most recognized medical coding certification issued by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), validating proficiency in applying CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codes for professional medical services. The proctored exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 4 hours, is open-book with approved code books, and requires a passing score of 70%. Candidates who pass receive the CPC-A (apprentice) credential until they fulfill a two-year experience requirement, which can be partially satisfied through completion of an 80-hour coding course or the Practicode program. Exam vouchers start at $425. To maintain the credential, coders must hold AAPC membership and earn 36 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every two years. The CPC opens doors to entry-level coding positions in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices, and provides a foundation for specialization or advancement into auditing, compliance, and revenue cycle management.
