Vocabulary Terms
The vocabulary terms from Lesson 1 and their definitions are listed below. Explain the meaning
of these words to students as you discuss the appropriate sections of the lesson.

home keys Keys on which the keyboarder places his or her fingers to begin
keying: a s d f for the left hand and j k l ; for the right hand
Space Bar Key used to place a space between words
Enter Key used to return the insertion point to the left margin and
move it down one line
Margin Blank space between the edge of the paper and the print
single-space Tapping the Enter key once to move the insertion point down one
line
double-space Tapping the Enter key twice to move the insertion point down
two lines

Teaching Strategies
Preview Lesson 1 and review the teaching notes for each section and activity listed below.

1A: Work-Area Arrangement—Discuss the work-area arrangement with students, noting the
appropriate location for the screen, textbook, and keyboard as illustrated in Figure 1-1.
1B: Keying Position—Using Figure 1-2, explain and demonstrate each of the keying position
bulleted items.
1C: Home-Key Position—Explain home-key position and then have students complete each of
the four steps as you read each step.
1D: Keystroking and Space Bar—Discuss keystroking. Tell students to keep the fingers curved
and upright, just barely touching the keys. They should tap the key using a light tap with the tip
of the finger.
Explain how to use the Space Bar to leave a space between letters. Make sure students
understand that when they curve the fingers over the home keys, the thumb should be tucked
in, pointing to the middle finger. The thumb should barely touch the Space Bar.

Demonstrate how to space using a quick down-and-in motion of the thumb. Have students place
their fingers on the home keys and try tapping the Space Bar as you say space several times.
Observe and offer verbal comments on keeping the fingers curved and upright and tucking the
thumb in.
1E: Enter Key—Discuss the technique for the Enter key. Tell students to reach over with the
little finger—keeping the rest of the fingers on the home keys—tap the Enter key, and
immediately return the little finger to the home key (;).

Demonstrate the correct way to tap the Enter key. After you demonstrate the Enter key
techniques a couple of times, have students place their fingers on the home keys and look at the
keyboard as you dictate: Enter (pause) Enter (pause) Enter.

1F: Home Keys and Space Bar—Reinforce keeping your fingers curved and upright. Discuss the
Tip and point out the DS between lines 2 and 3 in the textbook. As students key, move around
the room and offer suggestions for improvement. Make sure they are not looking at the
keyboard. Tell them to look at the picture of the keyboard above the copy if they are not sure
where a key is located.

1G: Enter Key—Observe students’ Enter key technique as they key the drill lines. Offer
suggestions for improvement. Make sure they are keeping the J finger anchored as they reach
over to tap the Enter key.

Lesson 2 Review
Outcomes
Discuss Lesson 2 learning outcomes with students:
• Review control of home keys (asdf jkl;)
• Review control of the Space Bar and Enter key

Data Files
None

Vocabulary Terms
No new vocabulary terms are introduced in this lesson.

Teaching Strategies
Preview Lesson 2 and review the teaching notes for each section and activity listed below.

2A: Work-Arrangement and Keying Position—Tell students to arrange their work area. After
giving them a few seconds, ask them the following questions:

• Is your keyboard directly in front of the chair?
• Is the front edge of the keyboard even with the edge of the desk?
• Is the monitor placed for easy viewing?
• Is the book at the right of the monitor?

Next have them place their fingers on the home row and get ready to key the home keys.
Ask them the following questions:

• Are your fingers curved and upright over the home keys?
• Are your wrists low, but not touching keyboard?
• Are your forearms parallel to the slant of the keyboard?
• Is your body erect?
• Are your feet flat on the floor?
• Are your eyes on the copy?

2B: Home-Key Position—Have students complete the three-step outline in 2B as you read the
three steps. After they complete it the first time, have them do it on their own a couple of times.

Finally, have them look at you and place their fingers on the home keys without looking. Then
have them check to see if they are on the home keys.

2C: Home Keys and Space Bar—Review keystroking, spacing, and Enter key technique.
Emphasize the correct technique. As students key, move around the room and evaluate their
techniques. Discourage students from using the Backspace or arrow keys to correct errors until
they learn the correct technique in Lesson 20. Let them know that errors are natural at this
stage of their keyboard learning.

2D: Enter Key—Demonstrate the correct technique for tapping the Enter key. Students should
quickly reach over to the Enter key, tap it, and immediately return the finger to its home-key
position. The J finger (index finger) should stay anchored to the J key so they can return the
other fingers to home-key position without looking.

2E: Key Words—Explain that the red lines | are divider lines to make it easier for students to
keep their place and focus on keying the word twice.

2F: End-of-Class Routine—Explain your end-of-class routine. Your procedure may differ from
what is listed in the textbook.

21st Century Skills—After students read the paragraph, discuss the Think Critically questions,
making sure they understand what these concepts mean and the value of trying to develop
these skills. If you see students needing a break from keying, this activity can be integrated
within the lesson at that point. However, don’t spend too much time on the activity at the
expense of learning to key.

Lesson 3 New Keys h and e
Outcomes
Discuss Lesson 3 learning outcomes with students:
• Learn reach technique for h and e
• Combine h and e smoothly with home keys

Data Files
• df 3d check sheet

Vocabulary Terms
No vocabulary terms are introduced in this lesson.

Teaching Strategies
Preview Lesson 3 and review the teaching notes for each section and activity listed below.

3A: Warmup—There will be a Warmup activity at the beginning of each keyboarding lesson.
Instruct students to begin keying the Warmup as soon as they come into the room. As they key,
observe their techniques and offer suggestions for improvement.

3B: Plan for Learning New Keys—Discuss the Plan for Learning New Keys and inform students
that you will use this plan for presenting each new key presented.
