Submissions without proper formatting, all required photos or sufficient responses will be rejected. Pre-
lab Questions
1. Identify the major similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic are similar in that they both contain ribosomes, chromosomes, and
cell vacuoles. However, they differ since the prokaryotic cells are typically plant and bacteria and
hence have no nucleus but nucleoid, while the eukaryotic cells are typically animals and have a
nucleus .
2. Where is the DNA housed in a prokaryotic cell? Where is it housed in a eukaryotic cell?
In prokaryotic cells, the DNA is housed in the cytoplasm, which is found in the nucleoid, while in
eukaryotic cells, the DNA is housed in the nucleus.
3. Name three structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell.
The cell wall, cell membrane, and cytoskeleton are the three structures that provide protection
to eukaryotic cells.

Lab 2 Cell Structure and Function BIO201L
EXPERIMENT 1: CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Introduction Questions
1. What is the difference between the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
The rough endoplasmic reticulum contains ribosomes, while the smooth endoplasmic reticulum
lacks ribosomes.
2. Would an animal cell be able to survive without a mitochondria? Why or why not?
An animal cell would not and cannot survive without a mitochondrion. The absence of
mitochondria would lead to energy deficiency due to the absence of oxygen.
3. What is the function of a lysosome?
Lysosomes have many digestive enzymes. These enzymes are used to break down damaged or
unknown material found within the cell.
