Pre-lab Questions
1. Identify the major similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
- Some major similarities between a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell is that they both
are organic cells that replicate using DNA replication. In order to do so, they must both
contain ribosomes that can copy the DNA and prepare it for replication, and protect
themselves with cell membranes.
- Some major differences include do eukaryotic cell has a vast array of organelles that
support its system, well the prokaryotic cell is very limited in its function. The DNA
structure in the eukaryotic cell is bound by a membrane while the prokaryotic cell is not.
the prokaryote cell protects itself with a cell wall, while a eukaryotic cell protects itself
with a cell membrane. During cell division, the prokaryotic cell divides in a binary fission
while the eukaryotic cell divides in a process called mitosis.
2. Where is the DNA housed in a prokaryotic cell? Where is it housed in a eukaryotic cell
- In a eukaryotic cell the DNA is protected by a nucleus and is membrane bound, while a
prokaryotic cell is not membrane bound.
3. Name three structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell.
- In every eukaryotic cell, the cell is protected by a cell membrane, in plants and bacteria,
the eukaryotic cell can also be protected by a cell wall, and in all structures are
supported by a cytoskeleton

Lab 2 Cell Structure and Function BIO201L
EXPERIMENT 1: CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Introduction Questions
1. What is the difference between the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
- The presence of ribosomes characterizes rough endoplasmic reticulum while smooth
Endoplasmic reticulum is characterized by the lack of ribosomes
2. Would an animal cell be able to survive without a mitochondria? Why or why not?
- Since the production of ATP is generated from within the mitochondria and is the main
fuel source for cellular energy, animals would not be able to survive without the
mitochondria, since it would lack the needed energy and die
3. What is the function of a lysosome?
- The lysosome breaks down extracellular material, and foreign bodies, and digests
obsolete parts of the cell.
- It also breaks down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids into usable materials for the cell.
