RAPID REVISION • CLASS 10 SCIENCE
THE FOUR LIFE PROCESSES
Nutrition • Respiration • Transportation • Excretion
A high-retention revision pack
Topic-wise notes • flowcharts • comparisons • memory tricks • final one-page recap
HOW TO USE THESE NOTES
First understand the flowcharts, then cover the page and recall the keywords aloud. Use the final memory sheet for a
quick revision before the exam.

CLASS 10 SCIENCE • LIFE PROCESSES PAGE 1
, 01 | NUTRITION
Nutrition: obtaining food and using food/its energy.
Types of nutrition
Type Main idea Example
Autotrophic Organisms make their own food. Plants
Heterotrophic — Holozoic Solid food is taken in; digestion occurs inside the body. Humans
Heterotrophic — Feed on dead and decaying matter; digestion occurs externally. Bread mould, mushroom, yeast
Saprophytic
Heterotrophic — Parasitic Obtain nutrition from a host without killing it (as stated in the notes). Lice, tapeworm
MEMORY TRICK
Holo → food inside | Sapro → dead/decaying | Parasite → host
Photosynthesis
CO■ + Water + Chlorophyll + Sunlight → Glucose + Oxygen + Water
Step What happens
1. Light absorption Chlorophyll absorbs light energy.
2. Energy conversion + water splitting Light energy changes to chemical energy; water molecules split.
3. Carbohydrate formation CO■ is reduced to carbohydrates.
KEY POINT
Plants store energy as starch; humans store it as glycogen.
Guard cells & stomata
Guard cells control the opening and closing of stomata. Water enters guard cells → stomata open. Water leaves guard
cells → stomata close.
Amoeba: holozoic nutrition
Ingestion → Digestion → Absorption → Assimilation → Egestion
Ingestion = taking in food • Digestion = breaking down food • Absorption = taking in digested food • Assimilation = utilising digested
food • Egestion = expelling waste.
