& "Metis" appear absurd and arbitrary to some Indigenous
communities?

identical to each other, the marriage and kinship cultures are the
same and play little to no role in the distinction.

◉ According to Waldrum, what is a white-status Native?
Answer: White-status Native encompasses non-status Indians and
Metis. Status Indians have had a long spanning political system
(reserves, hunting & fishing rules etc.) whereas the political systems
for white-status natives is relatively new.

status and white-status natives leads to inequities in the delivery of
government services. What inequities exist in the delivery of social
assistance & economic development programs?

,Separate schools have been constructed causing resentment of the
control held over the education of their children by the opposing
group.

administered by the Indian Affairs branch

seasons causing kinship problems

is perceived as an unfair advantage

◉ How has the legal distinction between Indian-Status and White-
status persons affected political developments in some Indigenous
communities?

, Answer: Indian-Status people have a longer traditional political
organization than white-status natives, this has made many white-
status natives feel subordinate because their political council is
undeveloped. White-Status Indians are often dismissed as non-
Indian and their concerns are over looked.

◉ Describe the effect of the reserve system on the daily lives of
registered Indian people. How did this system help to define Indian
identity among people of Indigenous descent?
Answer: They were subject to a range of prohibitions; denied
franchisement; not allowed to leave reserves without a pass from
the Indian agent; unable to purchase or sell stick, personal
possessions or any other commodity without written permission
from an agent.

This set of rules distanced the Indians and Metis establishing two
different treatments of Indigenous peoples. The Indian-Status (legal
administrative status) became a central feature of their social
identity as well as the major component dividing them. Such
prominent social and cultural change over a period of time leaves a
mark of self-identity.

◉ How do treaty rights affect the identity of Indigenous people in
Saskatchewan?
Answer: People of aboriginal ancestry who were prohibited from
'taking treaty' were those who had declared themselves to be Metis
