INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

Exploring Teachers’ Experiences of Creating Inclusive Learning Environments in
Mainstream Schools
1. Introduction to the Study
The purpose of this study is to explore teachers’ experiences of creating inclusive
learning environments in mainstream schools. Inclusive education aims to ensure that
all learners, including learners with disabilities, learning difficulties and different
educational needs, receive meaningful opportunities to participate in education. In
South Africa, inclusive education is supported by Education White Paper 6, which
promotes the development of an education system that responds to the different needs
of learners (Department of Education, 2001).
The research approach must match the purpose and objectives of the study. Since the
study focuses on teachers’ experiences, views and challenges, a qualitative approach
will be used. Qualitative research allows the researcher to understand how people
describe and make sense of their experiences in their own words (Creswell & Poth,
2018). Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers working
in mainstream schools. Purposive sampling will be used to select participants who have
experience of working with diverse learners. The information collected will be analysed
using thematic analysis. Attention will also be given to research quality, ethical
requirements, confidentiality and voluntary participation.
2. Research Approach and Philosophical Position
The study will use a qualitative research approach. A qualitative approach is suitable
because the research focuses on understanding teachers’ experiences, opinions and
challenges rather than measuring these experiences using numerical data. Qualitative
