A1. Learning Goal
Learning Goal – To improve student’s reading comprehension in various genres.
I teach a reading intervention (RTI) class on top of my regular middle school band classes. To
promote collaboration, I would send out weekly virtual newsletters about what is going on in class and
how the students are doing. These newsletters would include tips and activities that families can do at
home with their child towards this learning goal. For example, the virtual newsletter could include
reading examples for the students to read at home and the parents can ask questions about what they
have read. It could also include questions that parents can ask about any piece of literature the child has
read at school: “What was it about?”, “What was the topic of the article / story?”, or “What was the
main characters goal in the story?”. At the end of each virtual newsletter, I would include a forum that
parents can post on. I will encourage parents to post about their child’s reading accomplishments as well
as how it is going. In this forum, parents will be allowed to ask questions and collaborate with me.
A1a. Effectiveness of Family Collaboration Strategy
Sending out weekly virtual newsletters with tips and tricks for families to do at home will help
students achieve this learning goal. This will include families in their children’s education, hence further
reinforcing it after they leave school. Since the families will know what the children are doing in class
and what level they are currently on, they can check-in with the students at home. Parents can ask their
children what the book they are reading is about, reinforcing reading comprehension. Since the virtual
newsletter will give explicit tips and questions to ask it will be easy for parents to be fully involved in
their child’s education at home, working towards this goal. The collaboration strategy of having a forum
included in the weekly newsletter will help achieve the learning goal by keeping an open discussion
method for parents and I. Whenever a parents has a question or concern about their child’s reading
