Calculation Conventions for This Practice Bank
Use 1 kg = 2.2 lb, 1 g = 1,000 mg, 1 mg = 1,000 mcg, 1 L = 1,000 mL,
1 tbsp = 15 mL, and 1 tsp = 5 mL. Do not round until the final answer.
Round gravity IV rates to the nearest whole gtt/min and other calculations
as directed. Use a leading zero for values below 1 and no unnecessary
trailing zero.

Q1. A patient weighs 176 lb. What is the patient's weight in
kilograms?
A) 75 kg
B) 80 kg
C) 85 kg
D) 88 kg
Correct Answer: B) 80 kg
Rationale: 176 lb ÷ 2.2 lb/kg = 80 kg.
Q2. Convert 0.75 g to milligrams.
A) 75 mg
B) 750 mg
C) 7,500 mg
D) 0.75 mg
Correct Answer: B) 750 mg
Rationale: 0.75 g × 1,000 mg/g = 750 mg.
Q3. Convert 1,250 mcg to milligrams.
, A) 125 mg
B) 12.5 mg
C) 0.125 mg
D) 1.25 mg
Correct Answer: D) 1.25 mg
Rationale: 1,250 mcg ÷ 1,000 mcg/mg = 1.25 mg.
Q4. An IV bag contains 1.5 L of solution. How many milliliters are in
the bag?
A) 150 mL
B) 15,000 mL
C) 1,500 mL
D) 750 mL
Correct Answer: C) 1,500 mL
Rationale: 1.5 L × 1,000 mL/L = 1,500 mL.
Q5. The provider orders acetaminophen 650 mg PO. Tablets contain
325 mg each. How many tablets should the nurse administer?
A) 0.5 tablet
B) 1 tablet
C) 2 tablets
D) 3 tablets
Correct Answer: C) 2 tablets
Rationale: 650 mg ÷ 325 mg/tablet = 2 tablets.
Q6. Amoxicillin 750 mg PO is ordered. The medication is available as
250 mg/5 mL. How many milliliters should the nurse administer?
A) 15 mL
B) 10 mL
C) 7.5 mL
D) 20 mL
Correct Answer: A) 15 mL
Rationale: 750 mg ÷ 250 mg × 5 mL = 15 mL.
Q7. The prescription is for 0.5 g of a medication. Each capsule
contains 250 mg. How many capsules should be administered?
