Task 2
Western Governor's University
D260: Capstone
, A1
Prior to entering the program, I didn’t know much about health information management.
Most of my knowledge focused on medical coding. As I completed the program, I’ve come to
understand that health information management is more than medical coding. HIM includes data
analytics, informatics, data quality, revenue cycle management, and compliance (AHIMA, n.d.).
The BSHIM program was amazing from the beginning to the end. The only thing I
would’ve changed personally would have been to start my journey sooner! I originally enrolled
in my local university’s HIM program. Unfortunately, that program was not CAHIIM-accredited.
My mentor advised me to leave the school and find an accredited program, which led me to
WGU. Academically, I think I did very well. I transferred 77 credits from my associate’s degree
and completed the all but 2 classes in the first 2 months. There was a slight stall with my PPE
approval but once I started, I was able to complete my hours in a week. One thing I would hope
that could change would be for mentors to open more than one class at a time when a student is
accelerating and has proven to be completing classes in a timely manner.
An area of HIM that interests me is health informatics. I have a bachelor’s degree in
computer science and have always been interested in the field of data and informatics. I would
love to combine my passions for healthcare and data to further my career.
A2
During my professional practice experience, I was tasked with developing a coding
quality audit program. I had to review coding guidelines and the company’s policies to develop a
coding audit form to be used in future quarters and develop an instructional guide for coders to
use. As I was completing this project, I had to determine what criteria were required for the
audit, how coders would be evaluated on those criteria, and how statistics will be calculated.
