20-page handwritten-style high-school study notes
Read one page at a time, underline keywords, then redraw diagrams/processes from
memory.
What you will learn: reproduction basics, plant reproduction, human reproduction, puberty,
menstrual cycle, fertilisation, pregnancy and reproductive health.
BIG IDEA
BIG IDEA: Reproduction helps a species continue across generations.

, PAGE 2 — WHAT IS REPRODUCTION?
Reproduction is the biological process by which organisms produce new individuals of their
own kind.
Why? It ensures continuity of species, passes genetic information and can create variation.
Asexual: usually one parent; no fusion of gametes; offspring are usually genetically very
similar.
Sexual: gametes are involved and fertilisation usually produces a zygote.
REMEMBER
Memory hook: Asexual = little genetic mixing. Sexual = genetic shuffle.

, PAGE 3 — ASEXUAL vs SEXUAL
Asexual reproduction: often faster and needs no partner, but generally creates less genetic
variation.
Plant examples: runners in strawberry, tubers in potato and other forms of vegetative
propagation.
Sexual reproduction: combines genetic information from gametes and generally produces
greater variation.
Exam phrase: variation can help populations respond to changing environments.
Feature Asexual Sexual
Parents Usually one Usually two contribute gametes
Gametes No fusion Involved
Variation Usually low Usually higher
