Practise paragraphs – criminology
AC1.1 – honour crime

What is it?
Honour crime is a crime involving violence to defend the honour of their family after this
person has supposedly bought shame on them.

Criminal offences
Some examples of honour crime could be murder of the victim, abduction, disfigurement,
acid attacks and rape.

Type of victim
The typical victim tends to be females within the family. They tend to be wives who try and
attempt to leave their husbands or possibly young daughters who refuse to marry who their
parents force them to.

Type of offender
The usual type of offender for honour crime tends to be male members of the family who
don’t want shame to be bought upon them. They typically tend to be seen often in Asian
families.

Level of public awareness
Often, there is a low level of public awareness for honour crime due to it happening within
other cultures. Communities don’t tend to talk about this crime as they are unaware it is
illegal due to the culture divide.

Criminal or deviant?
Honour crime is illegal within the UK and viewed as a criminal offence. However, in other
countries it is legal to commit honour crime. It is also seen as deviant as it is harming
individuals and is against societal norms.

AC1.2- honour crime

Personal reasons
One personal reason people may not report honour crime could be because of fear. This may
be because they’re scared of escalation.

Social and cultural reasons
One social and cultural reason people may not report the crime is that it’s a culture bound
crime. This may be because it is within communities and people from other communities
may not see it as a crime.
