Historical Development of Probability
Probability has been developing for hundreds of years, and many of the ideas we use today
came from different cultures. Before probability was officially considered its own area of
mathematics, people were already finding ways to count and organize possible outcomes. In
ancient India, the scholar Pingala studied different combinations of short and long syllables used
in poetry. His work involved counting possible arrangements, which is similar to the
combinations students use in probability today. Chinese mathematicians also made important
contributions. Jia Xian worked with a triangular arrangement of numbers that was later known in
Europe as Pascal’s Triangle. This pattern can be used to count combinations and determine the
number of possible outcomes in probability situations. These examples show that ideas
connected to probability were developing in different parts of the world long before probability
became a formal branch of mathematics.
Probability became more formal in Europe during the 1600s when Blaise Pascal and Pierre
de Fermat began studying questions involving games of chance. In 1654, they communicated
about how to fairly divide winnings when a game ended before it was finished. To solve the
problem, they looked at the possible outcomes instead of simply guessing what would be fair.
Their work became an important beginning for modern probability. Later, Jacob Bernoulli
developed the law of large numbers, which explains why experimental results usually get closer
