This Analysis and Contextual Questions Booklet forms part of the complete Triumph
in the Face of Adversity literature package by Juffrou Ansie Study Notes. The package
also includes a PowerPoint Presentation designed to support teaching, revision and
classroom discussion.
The questions and answers are based on typical examination-style questions, past
paper trends and the important literary elements learners are expected to understand
in English FAL Paper 2.

How to Use This Booklet
This booklet is designed to help learners revise Triumph in the Face of Adversity in a
clear, structured and exam-focused way.
Learners should first read the full short story carefully. After reading, they can work
through the notes section by section to understand the plot, characters, setting,
themes, conflict, tone, mood, style, figurative language, symbolism and important
moments.
The Contextual Questions section should be completed without looking at the
answers first. Learners should try to answer in full sentences and support their
answers with evidence from the story where needed.
After completing the questions, learners can use the Memorandum / Model Answers
to check their work. The answers should be used as a guide to understand what a good
response looks like. Learners do not need to memorise the answers word for word but
should understand the ideas and practise explaining them in their own words.
For open-ended questions, learners must remember to give a clear opinion such as
Yes, No or Partly, followed by a proper explanation and evidence from the story.

Author
Kedibone Seku is a South African writer who was born
in Pimville, Soweto in 1974. After completing matric,
she became an Adult Basic Education and Training
specialist, also known as an ABET specialist. This
background links well with her writing because
Triumph in the Face of Adversity focuses strongly on
education, opportunity, personal growth and the
struggle to rise above difficult circumstances.
Her short story was published after she attended a
workshop connected to the Caine Prize for African
Writing. The story reflects realistic social challenges
