Purpose of the The purpose of the study, An Assessment Continuum: How healthcare
Study
professionals define and determine practice readiness of newly graduated
registered nurses, was to investigate how healthcare professionals define
and assess the readiness of newly registered nurses for clinical practiced.
The study aims to identify the factors that contribute to the assessment
process and determine whether there is a consistency in the assessment
approach among healthcare professionals. The findings of the study
provide insights into the development of strategies and interventions to
improve the practice readiness of newly graduated registered nurses.
Additionally, the study may contribute to the ongoing discussion on the
role of healthcare professionals in supporting the transition of newly
graduated registered nurses from academia to clinical practice.
Type of Research The study was a collective instrumental case study design that used a

qualitative approach. The purpose of the study was to define graduate
nurse practice readiness using the perspectives of Australian healthcare
workers that worked with the new grads over a period of time, using in-
depth data collection that involved many different sources of information
(Harrison et al., 2020). The case study was described as a qualitative

approach where the researcher explores a bounded system and multiple
bounded systems (Harrison et al., 2020). A collective instrumental case
refers to a grammatical case used to indicate the means or instrument by
which an action is performed collectible by a group of people or things. A
qualitative approach, on the other hand, is a research methodology that
focuses on the exploration of subjective experiences, meanings, and
perspectives of individuals. It aims to understand social phenomena, rather
than imposing preconceived theories or hypotheses.
Sample The sample consisted of 67 professionals employed at four different acute
care organizations in Australia. 43 individuals were in nursing, 11 in
medicine, 5 from human resources, and 8 from allied health. The age
range of the participants was 27-65 years old, with the average age being
43. 83% of the participants were female who had been in practice for an
average of 18.5 years. According to Harrison et al. (2020), “participants
numbers were subsequently increased using snowball sampling” (p. 200).
Data Collection The primary source of data collection were semi-structured individual
interviews and one focus group. Semi-structed individual interviews are a
research method where a researcher conducts a series of interviews with
participants in a study, and the questions asked follow a general guide
rather than a rigid script. This method allows for flexibility in the
responses of participants and can lead to more nuanced insights than more
structed interview methods. In the study, an author, a nurse academic and
