, PART 1: LISTENING AND SPEAKING (ORAL)
The oral component is assessed as part of your School-Based Assessment (SBA) throughout the year, across
all four terms. It is examined separately from the three written papers but still contributes to your final
promotion mark for English Home Language.

1.1 Overview of Formal Oral Tasks
Across Grade 12, your formal oral tasks typically include:
• A prepared speech
• An unprepared speech / impromptu speaking task OR unprepared reading aloud
• A group discussion, panel discussion or debate
• Listening comprehension (a formal test based on a text read aloud)
Note: Each of these is assessed with a rubric focusing on content, structure/organisation, language use
and delivery (voice, body language, eye contact).

1.2 Prepared Speech
A prepared speech is a formal talk on a chosen or given topic that you have researched, written and rehearsed
beforehand. It usually runs for about 3–5 minutes.

Conclusion 15–20% a memorable closing line, a call to action, or a
return to your opening 'hook'.

Example: "Imagine waking up and the FIRST thing you do, before you even get out of bed, is reach for
your phone. Sound familiar? Today I want to talk to you about the influence of social media on us as
teenagers."
