Purpose and control principles
This playbook makes calculator and spreadsheet work auditable. The objective is not a memorized
keystroke sequence; it is a reliable translation from economic timeline to inputs, with enough evidence to
diagnose a wrong answer.
● Draw the timeline or cash-flow column before touching a device.
● Match rate units to cash-flow frequency.
● Use one sign convention and one valuation perspective.
● Clear registers between unrelated problems.
● Record inputs, computed output, units, and valuation date.
● Use a second method for high-stakes checks when time permits.

Clear cash flows CF → 2nd → CLR WORK Clear cash-flow list
Payment timing 2nd → PMT; confirm END unless annuity due Confirm END/BEG annunciator
Set P/Y and C/Y deliberately; course problems often
Payments/year Set payment/compounding periods or manually convert
use 1 or stated frequency
Display enough precision; round only the reported
Decimals Same

Sign convention Outflow negative, inflow positive Same
Non-negotiable
If a calculator returns ERROR or an implausible value, do not keep changing inputs randomly. Rebuild the
timeline, clear the worksheet, check END/BGN, inspect P/Y and C/Y, and re-enter with opposite signs on
transaction sides.

Annuity due: use BGN only when payments occur at the beginning of each period, then return the
calculator to END. A delayed annuity must usually be valued one period before its first payment and then
moved to the requested date.
Rate conversion protocol
Periodic rate = APR ÷ m
Number of periods = years × m
EAR = (1 + APR/m)^m − 1
APR from EAR = m[(1 + EAR)^(1/m) − 1]
Never mix monthly cash flows with an annual rate. Write the rate label explicitly, such as “0.75% per
month,” before entering I/Y.
Bond workflow
1. Identify face value, coupon rate, payments per year, years to maturity/call, market price, and
requested yield convention.
2. Convert N, coupon payment, and I/Y to the coupon period.
3. Enter price and future cash flows with opposite signs.
4. Compute PV for price, I/Y for yield, or replace maturity/face with call date/call price for YTC.
Bond evidence: N = ___ | I/Y = ___ per half-year | PV = ___ | PMT = coupon/2 | FV = par | annualized
answer = ___
Cash-flow worksheet: NPV and IRR
1. Clear the cash-flow worksheet.
2. Enter CF0 with its economic sign.
3. Enter C01, C02, …; use frequency fields only for repeated identical adjacent cash flows.
4. For NPV, enter the periodic required return I and compute NPV.
5. For IRR, compute IRR and interpret it against the hurdle rate. Inspect sign changes first.
