Part A introduction - Answers Intro: Under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003,
the Nursing Council of New Zealand governs the practice of nurses by setting and monitoring
standards and competencies for registration to ensure the public receive safe and competent care.
The effective nursing practice of a person or whānau from another culture, as detailed in the Code of
Health and Disability Services Consumer Rights (2009) is determined by that person or family. Nurses
therefore, must incorporate the principles of Cultural Safety into their nursing practice.
Cultural safety principle one - Answers Principle 1: Cultural safety aims to improve the health status
of New Zealanders and applies to all relationships
What is principle ones indicator - Answers this is demonstrated through nurses acknowledging the
beliefs and practices of those who differ from them. For example this may be by: religious or spiritual
belief, ethnic origin or migrant experience.
What component of the meihana model does the indicator link to? - Answers This indicator links with
the Meihana model component Wairua which is defined as Maori beliefs regarding connectedness
and spirituality. Wairua identifies Maori beliefs, values and priorities, it is important for nurses to be
self-aware of those who differ from them so that nurses can enhance Maori engagement within the
health system.
Provide an example for principle one - Answers If I were to have worked with a Maori patient I would
have obtained a psychosocial assessment and had a conversation about their spiritual-religious
beliefs, their attachments to people, places like the land or sea and taonga like greenstone.
Establishing the Maori patients beliefs helps me to develop an understanding of how I can proceed
with their care in a way that honours their beliefs
Cultural safety principle two - Answers Principle 2: cultural safety aims to enhance the delivery of
health and disability services through a culturally safe nursing workforce
What is principle two's indicator - Answers This is demonstrated by empowering the users of the
service. People should be able to express degrees of perceived risk or safety. For example, someone
who feels unsafe may not be able to take full advantage of a primary health care service offered and
may subsequently require expensive and possibly dramatic secondary or tertiary intervention.
What component of the meihana model does the indicator link to? - Answers This indicator links to
the Meihana component Taiao which is defined as the physical environment of patient/whanau. Taiao
demonstrates the importance of gaining a clear understanding of the Maori patient and whanau
physical environment as this may influence the likelihood of Maori attending services.
Provide an example for principle two - Answers If I had a Maori patient I would have enquired them
specific questions about their home environment, their job and workplace health and safety to gather
an understanding of their physical environment. I would also ask questions regarding any barriers for
accessing healthcare like carparking or if the health environment had adequate seating for support
networks and if not, I would inform the RN and facilitate this so that Maori felt safe within a health
setting and Maori are encouraged to utilise health services
Cultural safety principle three - Answers Principle 3: Cultural safety is broad in its application
What is principle three's indicator - Answers this is demonstrated by nurses addressing the cause and
effect relationship of history, political, social, and employment status, housing, education, gender and
personal experience upon people who use nursing services
What component of the meihana model does the indicator link to? - Answers This indicator links to
the Meihana component Tinana which is defined as physical health and functioning of the patient.
Tinana incorporates the assessment of a standard medical history and determinants of health to
produce an accurate profile of the patients physical status.
Provide an example for principle three - Answers If I had a Maori patient I would have enquired about
if they obtain a healthy diet or not and if this correlates with their income. I would enquire if they
exercise, if they engage in substance use or take any medications. I would discuss with them their
physical symptoms and then obtain a physical examination under the supervision of an RN. These
questions would help determine whether the Maori's physical environment and socioeconomic
factors were impacting on their physical health and functioning and enable me to provide nursing
interventions that would promote positive health outcomes for the Maori.
Cultural safety principle four - Answers principle 4: Cultural safety has a close focus on
