POEM QUOTES

When we two parted

● “In secret we met/ in silence I grieve”

Through the pitiful image of “In secret we met –/ In silence I grieve”, Byron perhaps emphasises the
speaker’s suffering towards the inability to seek refuge in another in the attempt to protect the
identity and reputation of their former lover. Through the verb “grieve”, this perhaps positions the
speaker in a state of vulnerability as they struggle to overcome and reflect upon their failed
relationship which may depict the speaker’s former lover as cruel and heartless. In addition, by
juxtaposing the pronouns “we” and “I”, this could reinforce the speaker’s helplessness and their
unhappiness as they endure the pain of being alone, while pretending their romantic relationship or
affair never occurred. This may illustrate the speaker’s distress and lingering sadness in which they
are trapped in a never-ending cycle of suffering due to reciprocated love. Once more, this may
heighten the treachery of women in regards to love and may convey to one that past memories of a
romantic relationship are the cause of eternal pain.
