Critical Analysis of Part Two of The Metamorphosis

Document preview thumbnail
Vista previa 2 fuera de 5 páginas

The critical analysis of Part Two of The Metamorphosis examines the emotional and psychological changes that occur as Gregor's relationship with his family continues to deteriorate. It explores major themes such as alienation, dehumanization, family responsibility, identity, and sacrifice while analyzing important symbols including Gregor's room, the furniture, the picture on the wall, and food. The analysis also discusses Kafka's use of characterization, symbolism, irony, and narrative style to show how Gregor's isolation deepens and how his family's attitudes gradually change. Through these literary elements, Part Two reveals the growing emotional distance between Gregor and his family and develops the central ideas that lead to the novella's tragic conclusion.

Critical Analysis of Part Two of The
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

Prepared By: Suneela Amjad
Year: 2023

, Brief Narrative of Part Two
Part Two begins after Gregor's shocking transformation has become a reality that his family must
face every day. Gregor remains confined to his room, completely dependent on others for food
and care. His sister, Grete, gradually takes responsibility for looking after him and tries to
understand his changing needs. Although she initially shows kindness and patience, the
emotional distance between Gregor and his family continues to grow.

As the family's financial situation becomes more difficult, each member is forced to find work.
Their daily lives change, and Gregor realizes that they are learning to live without him. One of
the most important events in this part is the removal of furniture from Gregor's room.

Grete believes that clearing the room will give him more space to move around, while his mother
worries that removing his belongings will erase the last signs of his humanity.

Gregor becomes distressed because the furniture represents the life and identity he once had. In
trying to protect a picture hanging on the wall, he frightens his mother, leading to another violent
confrontation with his father. The section ends with Gregor suffering another painful injury,
while the emotional bond between him and his family grows even weaker.

Critical Analysis
The Growing Distance Between Gregor and His Family

Part Two focuses on the gradual breakdown of Gregor's relationship with his family. Unlike the
sudden shock of Part One, this section presents alienation as a slow and painful process. Gregor
is no longer simply a strange creature hidden behind a locked door. He has become someone the
family struggles to accept as part of their lives.

Grete is the only family member who initially shows compassion. She experiments with different
kinds of food, cleans Gregor's room, and tries to understand what he needs. Her actions suggest
that empathy comes from a willingness to understand another person's experience rather than
judging them by appearance. However, even Grete begins to change as the burden of caring for
Gregor increases. Her kindness slowly becomes responsibility, and responsibility gradually turns
into frustration.

Kafka shows that relationships based only on duty are difficult to maintain. Genuine compassion
requires emotional understanding, and as that understanding disappears, Gregor becomes
increasingly isolated.
