Analysis vs Description

Analysis and description are two distinct but complementary components of
social work assessment, recording and decision making. Description involves
accurately reporting facts, observations and events, while analysis involves
interpreting that information, identifying patterns, explaining significance and
reaching evidence-informed conclusions. High-quality social work requires both
skills; description provides the factual foundation, whereas analysis transforms
information into professional understanding that informs assessment,
intervention and safeguarding decisions. Within social work, the ability to move
beyond description towards critical analysis is essential for exercising
professional judgement, identifying risk and promoting effective, person-centred
practice.

The distinction between description and analysis has become increasingly
important within UK social work as a result of safeguarding reviews and
inspections. Numerous Serious Case Reviews, Safeguarding Adult Reviews and
Ofsted inspections have found that assessments sometimes contain detailed
descriptions of events but insufficient analysis explaining what the information
means or how it influences professional decision making. Reports such as the
Munro Review of Child Protection (2011) emphasised that effective social work
depends not simply on gathering information but on critically analysing evidence
to understand children's and adults' lived experiences.

Description involves recording objective information about what has been
observed, reported or evidenced. Good description is factual, accurate, concise
and free from unnecessary assumptions. Examples include observations made
during home visits, statements from service users, dates of significant events,
attendance records or physical conditions within the home. Description answers
questions such as:

 What happened?
 Who was present?
 When did the event occur?
 What was observed?
 What information was provided?

Description is essential because accurate analysis depends upon reliable
evidence.
