Module 4 Assignment: Selecting a Field of Interest
As I work towards my Ed. D in Curriculum and Instruction, I will make the transition
from student-to-student researcher, changing many aspects of my life along the way. While
transitioning to a student researcher, I hope to conduct meaningful research to build upon my
passion of literacy and Early Childhood Education. I wish to use the knowledge I receive from
each course to better myself as an educator and ultimately have a positive effect on each student
that is a part of my classroom community for years to come. Teachers who conduct and
participate in action research frequently grow more skilled in assessing student learning and
making use of data to modify and enhance their teaching strategies and lesson delivery (Bruyère,
2020). When I decide on a topic for the dissertation process to investigate, my goal is to choose a
theme that is meaningful and fits my passions as an educator.
Possible dissertation topics
How does reading aloud to children affect their overall understanding of literacy?
How much does a child’s homelife and socioeconomic status effect their education?
How detrimental is a reading deficit in elementary school?
What are the lasting effects on children who are read to at a young age versus children
who are not read to before starting school?
Attraction to Topic
I teach and live in a low-income area and the topics I have been brainstorming are true to
my heart and questions I ask myself as an educator on a daily basis. Before a child enters
preschool and/ or kindergarten they can experience a reading deficit, due to the lack of literacy
used in the home. Literacy stretched far beyond a child knowing their letter sounds. Language is
an important literacy skill a child needs in order to be a successful reader (Hunter, et al., 2017).
