As the "Lab Test Before and After" graph shows, the PI initiatives resulted in a
positive effect on turnaround times during every step of the lab testing procedure. We
observed the most significant decrease in turnaround time in the Draw stage after the
process was implemented. There was also a substantial decrease in average time
during the testing phase of the lab process. The reporting stage, however, showed only
slight gains, implying that delays persist even after the lab tests are finished. Looking at
the bigger picture, the graph illustrates that each step in the lab workflow became
quicker after the improvements, suggesting that needless delays were indeed
minimized.
Although this is great news, it can be determined from the graph that there are
still areas for improvement. The greatest improvement was seen during the draw phase,
which could be due to communicating more efficiently and transporting the specimen
faster. Since testing and reporting saw only minor improvements, another area of the
workflow could be presenting challenges within the lab.
Benchmarks and Project Objectives
According to the team charter, the goal was for 95% of stat
CBC/LYTES/BUN/GLC results to come back within 60 minutes of specimen collection
time. Looking at the graph, it’s evident that all turnaround time metrics got better after
the changes were made. Therefore, the interventions were successful at moving
towards our goal. Looking at the figures, achieving sub-60-minute turnaround times
remains elusive, so while improvements are clear, the benchmark itself seems to have
