, In Woman at Point Zero, Nawal El Saadawi presents silence as a form of suffering produced by

patriarchal oppression. The novel centers on Firdaus, a woman who is on the death row after

committing a murder but who narrates her life story to a psychiatrist. El Saadawi does not just

give an account of the story of Firdaus in her words, she demonstrates the pattern of exploitation

and oppression that extends beyond her personal experience. In Woman at Point Zero, El

Saadawi presents sexual violence not as isolated brutality but as a product of systemic patriarchy.

Through fragmented narrative structure, bodily symbolism, and the exposure of institutional

hypocrisy, she transforms Firdaus’s personal suffering into a critique of the structures that

normalize and sustain male dominance.

In defining Woman at Point Zero as a confessional novel, the novel’s frame structure ensures that

Firdaus narrates her own life before her execution. Firdaus has the power to tell the story in this

structure, but it is death that routinely anchors the narrative of her life. From the beginning,

readers know that Firdaus will be executed, and the suspense is not in her fate but in the

processes that got her there. El Saadawi, positioned as a listener within the frame narrative,

records Firdaus’s own articulation of despair when she proclaims, “I have been searching for

something that would allow me to live, but I found nothing.” The verb “searching” suggests

movement and hope, yet the abrupt finality of “nothing” ends the sentence without qualification.

This language breakdown shows that her life was cut short by the rigid rules of her world. This

fragmented narrative form disorients the reader to be confused in a manner that is similar to the

way Firdaus has her memory splintered. The fact that she contradicts herself when she says that

“I have won life and death because I do not want to live” is an indication of how extreme her

action of defiance is; she negated fear and redefined execution as liberation. This reaction to the

silencing of women in the patriarchal society also gives Firdaus the final word. The paradox
