How far do you agree that immigrants faced considerate discrimination in
the inter-war period (1918-39)

In the period 1918-39 it can be argued that immigrants faced an immense
amount of discrimination to a large extent via harsh government
legislation, discrimination in the workplace and riots throughout England.
Although it can be argued that discrimination was limited due to the
increase in organizations to improve discrimination this was limited as it
had little long term impact and was not applicable to all ethnic minorities
in Britian.

Firstly it can be argued that immigrants faced considerable discrimination
in the interwar period due to their treatment they received from the
broader public via rioting. This was the result of the demobilization of the
army in 1919 which resulted in many white individuals rioting out against
individuals of color were working along side them. This was very much
prevalent in dock work where certain unions such as in Liverpool went on
strike in protest against working with Indian seamen. The riots were
widespread and occurred all over England affecting regions such as
Cardiff, Newport, Glasgow, London, Liverpool and Sheffield. In Cardiff for
example riots resulted in 3 death and £3000 worth of property damage. In
Limehouse east end London blacks were brutally attacked in a 4 day riot
by white unemployed men. Much of these race motivated riots had long
term consequences as they made certain regions/ jobs an uncomfortable
and hostile place for people of color and the consequences such as death
and property damage had lasting damaging impact upon families. Thus it
can be argued that immigrants faced considerable discrimination in the
interwar period.

It can be further argued that immigrants faced considerable discrimination
in the inter war period due to the hostility they faced within the
workplace. MP Neil Madean for example found that Asian chefs were paid
£5 compared to £20 of white men as well a the league of colored people
that 80% of black people faced periods of prolonged unemployment
compared to 30% of white people. Discrimination amounted to direct
action against black people within jobs, as in 1919 Liverpool white workers
went on strike resulting in the job losses of over 120 black people. This
discrimination in the workplace represents the broader discrimination
immigrants faced as they were prevented from even economically
supporting themselves with blatant racist attitudes which prevented them
from gaining secure work. This further was widespread as all people of
color regardless of their social class were impacted and the long term
consequences lead to failure to financially support themselves supporting
