Osteoporosis Exam 5 #1 Questions with correct answers
Is Osteoporosis a skeletal or joint tissue disease? - ✔✔Skeletal

What is Osteoporosis? (description) - ✔✔- Classified as the loss of bone mineral
density, making them more susceptible to fracture.

- Osteoporosis = 'porous bone'. Under microscope, healthy bone looks like
honeycomb. When osteoporosis occurs, holes are much larger, as the bone
contains abnormal tissue structure.

How does Osteoporosis occur? - ✔✔- Occurs when bones loose their minerals,
such as calcium, more quickly than the body can replace them. This then produces
a loss of bone mass.

- As the bones become thinner and less dense, minor falls or bumps can cause a
fracture. (a complete or partial break in a bone)

- Any bones affected, but most common are in the vertebras, ribs, pelvis, and
arms.

List the four causes of Osteoporosis - ✔✔1. Gender
2. Excessive Alcohol intake
3. Little to no sun exposure
4. Changes in Parathyroid hormone (PTH) production

, How is GENDER a cause of Osteoporosis? - ✔✔Women have a higher risk of
developing osteoporosis due to the rapid decline of oestrogen during menopause.
Oestrogen levels decrees = bone loses calcium and other minerals at much faster
rate.

How is EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL INTAKE a cause of Osteoporosis? - ✔✔- Alcohol
interferes with the pancreas and it's absorption of calcium and vitamin D.
- also affect the liver, important for activating vitamins, and important for calcium
reabsorption.
Without reabsorption of vitamin D and calcium, bones don't get the minerals they
need, making the malnourished, brittle and weak.

How is LITTLE SUN EXPOSURE a cause of Osteoporosis? - ✔✔Vitamin D's function
is to enhance the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the small intestine. If
people are not getting enough sun, body unable to absorb calcium into bones,
which means bones will be weaker

How is PTH PRODUCTION a cause of Osteoporosis? - ✔✔- PTH is a hormone,
produced by parathyroid gland, that regulates the amount of calcium and
phosphorous in the body. (which is needed for bone formation).

- Secretion of PTH is activated when blood calcium levels are low.
- This stimulates the breakdown of bone, so calcium is freed up to enter into the
bloodstream to maintain homoeostasis.

- An overactive parathyroid means to much PTH is released, resulting in a
funnelling of calcium out of the bones. This leads to bone thinning and a loss of
bone mass, and ultimately, osteoporosis.
