STATE SPECIFIC GUIDELINES 2 State Specific Guidelines for Prescribing Controlled Substances Our nation is in an opioid epidemic, and it will only continue to rise unless there are more rigorous investigation and resistance in prescribing medications. In 2018 alone, over 53 million individuals or 19.4% of our nation over the age of 12 were misusing prescription drugs or illegal drugs in the prior year (Substance Abuse and Addiction Statistics, 2020). Concerning the opioid epidemic, all states that adjusted will continue to adjust specific treatment plans or interventions based on appropriate actions. Throughout this paper, recommendations and guidelines of Illinois, specific laws on controlled substances prescribing for nurse practitioners, and the Illinois prescription drug monitoring program will be discussed further. Guidelines and Recommendations for your state Many organizations, task forces, and groups have created guidelines or recommendations on specific interventions or educational opportunities for those in Illinois to combat the opioid pandemic. The state of Illinois developed an Illinois Opioid Action Plan that focuses on three pillars created to prevent, treat, recover, and respond to the opioid crisis. Concerning the prevention stand point, the focus is to increase the number of providers using the Prescription monitoring program (PMP) and decrease the amount of high risk prescribing through contributor education and safe suggesting strategies. The Illinois department of healthcare and family services (IDHFS) pain management program helps reduce the amount of polypharmacy and inappropriate narcotic analgesic medications; for more information on the program, go to . The website also provides educational information and resources for both patients and providers to easily access and gain more knowledge on the opioid epidemic.
