Discuss the techniques used to help clients clarify value 10. Analyze personal values as a student of nursing. What are ethics? The study of conduct and character Concerned with determining what is good or valuable for individuals, groups of individuals or society Reflect a commitment to standards above personal preferences There are many differing values and opinions regarding health care such as the right thing to do Conflict may occur when ethics, values and perceptions regarding health care meet Important Terms in Health Ethics Autonomy-freedom from external control The commitment to include patients in health care decisions in order to protect their independence. Scenario: You are rounding with a surgeon who plans to perform an amputation on a young adults leg following a motor vehicle accident. The physician is obligated to discuss the planned surgical procedure, risks, benefits, complications and implications for not having the procedure. The signature of the patient on the operative consent is a legal document representing respect for the autonomy of the patient.
