term effect on their mental health. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the most
common mental health conditions that police personnel deal with (Morash et al., 2020). The
case of Officer Richard Walker, whose experiences in the Police Officer Timeline media
initiative highlight the significant impacts of PTSD on conduct and judgment. The article will
examine the effects of PTSD on Officer Walker and the wider ramifications for law enforcement
officers based on recent studies.
PTSD and Its Impact on Officer Walker’s Behavior
According to research, PTSD has been linked to a variety of maladaptive behaviors in
police enforcement. Officers with PTSD are more likely to experience depressive symptoms,
substance addiction, and violence, according to a study by Morash et al. (2020). These
manifestations have the potential to impair job performance, lead to unpredictable decision-
making, and eventually endanger public safety (Morash et al., 2020). Walker's connections with
family members and other police officers, as well as his judgment and coping mechanisms,
have been negatively impacted by the psychological turmoil resulting from traumatic
experiences.
Officer Walker consistently displays elevated levels of both psychological and
physiological arousal. Even in normal or safe settings, he is constantly on high alert and
anticipates danger. Additionally, he exhibits a propensity to separate himself and distance
