This is an OCR A Level Religious Studies Developments in Christian Thought essay on the question “Augustine’s view of human nature is deeply pessimistic – Discuss.” Written by myself after achieving an A grade in OCR A Level Religious Studies (2021), it explores Augustine’s understanding of human nature, focusing on original sin, the Fall, free will, grace, and predestination. The essay evaluates whether Augustine’s view is overly pessimistic, considering concepts such as concupiscence, summum bonum, and humanity’s need for God’s grace. It also discusses whether salvation and redemption offer a more hopeful view of human nature, weighing up both sides before reaching a balanced conclusion. This resource is ideal for revision, essay planning, and exam preparation, providing a clear model answer with balanced evaluation for OCR A Level Religious Studies Developments in Christian Thought 40-mark questions on Augustine and human nature.

‘Augustine’s view of human nature is deeply pessimistic’ –
Discuss
40 marks
OCR A-level religious studies

Augustine’s view of human nature is arguably pessimistic as he teaches that human nature is sinful
and humans are drawn to do bad because of Original Sin, however he also teaches that humans can
be saved through the gift of God’s grace.

Augustine lived in the 6th century in North Africa and is considered one of the most influential
Christian thinkers. His interpretations of sin and human nature from studying the Bible developed
the Christian philosophy and his work is still relevant in the church today, with many philosophers
and Christians having argued the relevance and truth in his works.
