●● Types of Validity
Answer: Face Validity
Content Validity
Criterion Validity
Construct Validity

●● Face Validity
Answer: Face Validity: The extent to which a measure appears
(superficially) to assess construct of interest - not a formal validation
procedure. Does not depend on established theories for support
Cursory review of items; do they seem to assess what you think they
should assess?

●● Content Validity
Answer: Content Validity: The extent to which a measure/item reflects
the specific theoretical domain of interest.
Usually used to asses specific abilities not often for psychological
constructs which capture a wide range of behaviors (i.e. "assertiveness"
or "depression."

, E.g., a "math test" with no "addition" problems would not have high
content validity. A "math test" with content validity would have to
capture the wide range of math.
Student: I spent all night studying the chapter and this question isn't
addressed anywhere in the textbook!
Translation: I question this item's content validity.

●● Content Validity: How to Quantify?
Answer: Lawshe (1975) proposed the following method:
Ask several raters "is the skill or knowledge measured by this item:
essential, not essential but useful, or not necessary" respond to each item
on a test with
Content Validity Ratio - The raters responses (above) can then be
entered into a formula called CVR.
Is an item essential?
If CVR is negative, less than half the raters agree that it is. If CVR is
zero, exactly half the raters agree that it is; and if CVR is positive, over
half the raters agree that it is.
More simple method: Just have raters identify whether the item should
belong on the test and calculate inter-rater reliability.

●● Criterion Validity
Answer: Criterion Validity: The degree to which the instrument
correlates with one or more outcome criteria.
Two types of Criterion Validity
