Assignment 3: Chart Types
Question 1
For each of the following charts, list the pre-attentive attribute(s) that it
uses for visualization. (16 points total, 2 points each)
Answer 1.
i. Bar Chart
Pre attentive attributes for bar chart = Length, Width, added marks and colours
ii. Line Chart
Pre attentive attributes for line chart = Length, orientation and colours
iii. Scatterplot
Pre attentive attributes for Scatterplot chart = Spatial group, 3D positioning, 2D
positioning and colours
iv. Dot plot
Pre attentive attributes for Dot plot chart = height, length and colour
v. Choropleth Map
Pre attentive attributes for Choropleth Map = Hue colours, size, disunite colour
vi. Symbol Map
Pre attentive attributes for Symbol Map = Size, shape, symbols and colours
vii. Highlighted Table
Pre attentive attributes for Highlighted Table = Colours, intensity, contrast and
shades
viii. Bullet graph
Pre attentive attributes for Bullet graph = colour, hue, intensity, Length,
enclosure and orientation
, Question 2
For each of the four data types we discussed previously: Categorical, Ordinal,
Interval, & Ratio, list which plotting charts would be suitable for creating a
visualization for each of the scenarios listed below: (4 points, 1 point per
question)
Answer 2.
1. Visualizing different quantities corresponding to a categorical attribute.
Example: Number of male vs female students.
The visualization of categorical attributes for different portions we prefer
that the visualization can be represent in form of Bar graph. The pre
attentive attribute for Bar graph is Width, Length and colour. Using the Bar
graph is more efficient to maximise Data Ink Ratio for the information.
