The Student Introductions forum activity demonstrated the importance of alternative forms
of assessment in teaching and learning. Rather than functioning merely as an icebreaker,
the activity provided an opportunity for learners to express themselves, interact with
others, and reflect on their educational experiences. Such activities show that
assessment should not only focus on testing knowledge but should also support learning
and development.
According to the AED3701 study material and the Department of Basic Education (DBE)
guidelines, this activity represents an informal assessment because it was integrated
into the learning process and did not form part of a formal examination. It also represents
formative assessment, since its purpose was to promote learning, encourage
participation, and provide opportunities for reflection and interaction. The form of
assessment used was an alternative assessment, specifically a discussion forum
combined with a video presentation and peer feedback.
