Treating Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour in Children and Youth with ASD
An Integrated Approach of ABA and CBT
OCD
- Set of rules and rituals which must be followed
- Often takes up an hour or more per day
- Organization, germs, constantly checking something
- Example; checking that the door is locked 5 or 6 times
Consider the Challenges of ASD…
- Limited verbal repertoire
- Need for social interaction
o Child could constantly be asking inappropriate questions due to lack of
awareness of how to interact properly
o This could be caused by the need for attention, child can be taught to talk/get
attention in other ways
- Fear of embarrassment (challenges, being made fun of)
o Specific routines that the child “needs” to do may be embarrassing
- Challenges in 2 key domains
o Communication/Social interaction
o Restrictive and repetitive behaviour
Repetitive Behaviour
- Lower order repetitive behaviour
o Motoric repetitive behaviours
o Example; stereotyped movements and self-injury
- Higher order repetitive behaviour
o More complex behaviours
o Ordering and arranging, washing, rigid routines, etc.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsession (thought) --- Anxiety --- Compulsions --- Relief
- Cycle of behaviours which causes relief (negative reinforcement)
o When individual engages in compulsion, anxiety goes away
