Task 2: Logistics & Operations/Change Management
A. Discuss options and considerations for transporting the product described
in the scenario to the retail facilities by doing the following:
1. (A1) Identify two different product packaging options and explain why you
chose them.
Primary packaging would be ineffective for the delicate mandolins.
Therefore, secondary and tertiary packaging would be the best options for
shipments. Secondary packaging is designed for retailers instead of
customers and offers more protection for fragile instruments. Using cartons
along with protective cushioning will keep the mandolins stabilized during
transit.
Tertiary packaging would be used when shipping large quantities. Large
crates filled with secondary packaged boxes allow for safe and efficient
stacking and crating by forklifts in preparation for domestic or international
transport.
2. (A2) Identify two different potential risks to consider when storing your
product and describe how you will mitigate each risk.
Due to the fragile nature of the mandolins, environmental disasters such as
1
, fire or water could be catastrophic for stored inventory. A climate-
controlled storage facility with proper drainage, smoke detectors, and fire
alarms would mitigate the risk.
Another more likely risk is damage while moving the boxes for shipment—
the need to package them securely, as mentioned above. The storage area
should also be well organized, and all forklift drivers should be trained
appropriately.
