- Research possible topics - often controversial/conversational
- 1 hour time for essay! (Reading 5 mins, 15 minutes planning, write for the rest)
- 2 ½ - 3 pages
- **no personal pronouns!
STRUCTURE
‣ PLAN (6 marks)
1. Clearly identify stance - stick to it!!
‣ State AGREE/DISAGREE and then what this relates to
2. Key points/themes present (e.g. health, environment) KEY EXAMPLE
(A/B) = source
3. Key points developed
CA = counter argument
4. Identify sources! (e.g [a]) - one point can be from multiple sources
= refute
5. Own info identified
O = Own info
6. Counter arguments identified ➡ = Credibility
7. Don’t worry if plan doesn’t match essay completely
- Can be mind map/linear
- Try to include a key
‣ INTRO
- Do not start with “I agree/disagree” but must include clear stance.
- Where you give all definitions
- One strategy is to state why the topic is significant then, therefore… stance
‣ BODY
- Need 10-12 facts from sources for full marks! (Definitions DO NOT count)
- Use 2-3 points from own knowledge (also not definitions)
- 3-4 counter arguments (remember to refute them)
- If you use a fact/own knowledge to refute a counter argument, it is NOT included in 10-12 facts
- so to use UNRELIABILITY as a CA (e.g. some people argue … however the source is not reliable
because …)
- DO NOT use own knowledge as a counter argument!
- 2-3 points about reliability/credibility - one credible, one not credible etc.
