Module: Mathematics for Intermediate Phase Teachers I (MIP1501)
Unique Number: 769422

Question 1 (37)

1.1 A Grade 5 learner writes 4008 as “four thousand and eight”.

a) Is the answer by the learner correct? Motivate your answer. (3)

Yes, the learner's answer is correct.

The number 4008 consists of:

• 4 thousands = 4000

• 0 hundreds = 0

• 0 tens = 0

• 8 ones = 8

When these values are combined, we get:

4000 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 4008

Therefore, the number name is four thousand and eight.

b) Write 4008 in expanded form using powers of 10 and briefly explain each step to
a Grade 5 learner. (5)

Expanded form using powers of 10:

𝟒𝟎𝟎𝟖 = (𝟒 × 𝟏𝟎𝟑 ) + (𝟎 × 𝟏𝟎𝟐 ) + (𝟎 × 𝟏𝟎𝟏 ) + (𝟖 × 𝟏𝟎𝟎 )

Explanation:

• The digit 4 is in the thousands place, so it represents:

𝟒 × 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 = 𝟒𝟎𝟎𝟎

• The first 0 is in the hundreds place, so it represents:

𝟎 × 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝟎

, • The second 0 is in the tens place, so it represents:

𝟎 × 𝟏𝟎 = 𝟎

• The digit 8 is in the ones place, so it represents:

𝟖×𝟏 =𝟖

Adding all values:

𝟒𝟎𝟎𝟎 + 𝟎 + 𝟎 + 𝟖 = 𝟒𝟎𝟎𝟖

c) Explain to the learner what the two zeros represent in 4008. (3)

The first zero is in the hundreds place, which means there are no hundreds.

The second zero is in the tens place, which means there are no tens.

The zeros act as place holders. They keep the digits 4 and 8 in their correct
positions.

Without the zeros, the value of the number would change completely.

d) If you remove both zeros, what number do you get? Explain the effect on the
value. (4)

If both zeros are removed:

4008 → 48

The new number is 48.

Comparison:

• Original number = 4008

• New number = 48

The value becomes much smaller because the digit 4 moves from the thousands
place to the tens place.

This shows that zeros are important because they help keep digits in their correct
place values.
