Unit 1 - Fundamentals of Physics
WS Nigrini (2019)
, Introduction
In this learning unit we will focus on:
• significant figures and scientific notation
• using a scientific calculator to evaluate expressions
• solving equations
• units of measurement
• metric prefixes
• converting between different units of measurement
, Significant figures
• Some numbers that are used in scientific work are
known to be exact, for example, the number of cubic
centimeters in one liter or the number of protons
inside a particular atom.
• Inexact numbers, on the other hand, contain some
degree of uncertainty (for example, the thickness of
your student card when measured to the nearest
millimeter.)
• Inexact numbers frequently occur when
measurements are made.
