LO: Define the four activities of managers in the traditional approach to work
In the traditional approach to work, it’s the classical management. Managers should:
1. Plan ahead
2. Select and organize people
3. Command and drive employees (checking off the checklist)
4. Coordinate and control activities (someone at the top who distributes tasks)

The founder of management science is Fredrick Taylor in his book The Principles of Scientific
Management, in which there was one right way to do things.

LO: Explain the three questions under the new approach to work and how they apply to work
Focus on leadership:
1. Where are we going? Looking further down the road and anticipating changes.
2. Why are we going there? What is the purpose behind it? Focus beyond tasks – more on
vision and change.
3. How are we going to get there? Leaders accompany followers through change.
Communication is key! (more than e.g. being extraverted).

LO: Name the three places where we see digitalization
Digitalization is the move from analog, traditional approaches established in the industrial age to
creative, digital and technology-based approaches. Where do we see it?
 Organizational level, culture of innovation, experimentation and updating value proposition.
Process orientation.
 Dyadic/group level, working closely, but at a distance (the big transition in 2020, covid).
Through different technologies, we still need to build trust.
 Individual level, managing boundaries with technology, continuous learning. This means a lot
more self-leadership and managing time. How do I create a separation between private life
and work life?

LO: Name the different factors in digitalization (i.e. digital transformation, digital maturity)
Digital transformation is a change in how a firm employs digital technologies, to develop a new digital
business model that helps to create and appropriate more value for the firm. Factors that are driving
the need for digital transformation:
 Emerging digital technologies, as we see new possibilities, firms try to integrate it to stay
competitive.
 Wider reach of competitors, digital firms. The landscape is changing, more digital-only firms.
 Digital touchpoints, social media.
Digital as the new norm means defying traditional business rules.

LO: List the four factors that signal that firms are digitally mature
Digital maturity is how organizations systematically prepare to adapt consistently to ongoing digital
change. Firms that is digitally mature:
1. Communicate a clear, coherent digital strategy that is aligned with the overall organizational
strategy.
2. Focus on the long-term. Technology will continue to develop, so we don’t even know what is
possible.
