Clear, accurate definitions of any important terms
– An argument
• This should be based on detailed, accurate knowledge of the subject,
and contain good critical analysis and evaluation of the problem at the
heart of the essay question, and of the opinions given by secondary
authors. It must be your argument, even if relying on the work of
secondary sources. It must be clearly signposted to the reader – in
particular, when introducing objections, it is worth making it clear
from the outset whether you agree with them or not.
– A conclusion which:
• a) follows from the argument of the essay
• b) says the same thing as you promised in the introduction.
