THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM


Functions

● supply the blood with oxygen

● deliver oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body

Organs:

Upper respiratory Tract Lower respiratory tract

● Nasal cavity ● Trachea

● Pharynx ● Primary bronchi

● larynx ● lungs



Nose

● main gateway of the respiratory system

● cilia - tiny hair that line the nostrils where air enters



Pharynx

● common opening for food and air

● also called as throat

● nasopharynx - part of the pharynx that is related to respiration

, Epiglottis

● flap of muscles that guard the the path of the pharynx that leads to the
trachea to ensure that food and air will enter their respective destinations



Larynx

● also called as voice box

● composed of the vocal cords that vibrate and produce sounds as the air
passes through



Trachea

● also known as windpipe

● a cylindrical tube that is 5 inches long

● composed of rings of cartilage

● serves as a passageway of air going in and out of the lungs



Bronchi

● main passageway of air into the lungs that are lined with cilia

● primary bronchi - first division of the trachea

● bronchial tree

● bronchioles - 1 mm thick



Air Sac

● functional unit of the lungs

● alveoli - tiny outpocketings; one-cell thick and surrounded by bloodvessels



Lungs

● cone-shaped organs used for respiration
