environment (DfE). Note: The section in your prescribed textbook with the
heading “Design for Sustainability”, on page 93, introduces the concept of
DfE briefly. Your task is to research this subject area further. Among other
sources, your research may include your prescribed textbook and/or other
relevant textbooks and/or articles and/or online searches. [7]
Interpreting the question.
What is important the most is to understand the tenets of the question before
attempting anything.
Students are supposed to write a paper which is externally researched in nature.
This is so due to the fact that, it is illustrated clearly that you are allowed to use
external research engines such as google scholar.
Firstly students need to give the definition of design for environment as given in many
texts.
Eg design for environment can be defined as a system that focuses on improving
environmental impacts over a product life cycle by incorporating environmental
consideration into product design according to government of Canada periodic reports
(2018).
The example that was given is that of Industry Canada that partnered with the design
exchange and Canadian manufacturers and exporters to review this valuable service
business function.
Collier and Evans (2017) argued that DfE is the explicit consideration of environment
concern during the design of goods, services and processes and include in such
practises as designing for recycling and disassembling.
In other words, the important aspects are of environmental welfare during and after
any production process.
So students can apply this concept through giving a vivid example that is practical as
a way of showing how this concept really works.
It is again important to stick to the stipulated length of the response, ie at most a page
is enough to present the facts needed considering marks as well.
In short, define the key word ie DeF and then explain in your own words briefly.
Give an example from a company of choice either from the internet or any practical
company you know and show how this concept can be applied.
