, PRELUDE TO WORLD WAR II:
THE RISE OF TOTALITARIAN DICTATORS
The world was a terribly unstable place throughout
the 1920s & 1930s. Economic crisis, social & political
unrest, & various other factors contributed to this inc-
reasing instability. As a result, people in many nations
across the globe began to question democracy & other
traditional institutions. This was especially the case in
the Soviet Union, Italy, & Germany, where charismatic
leaders took advantage of this atmosphere to forge
totalitarian dictatorships during this critical era.
THE FACES OF TOTALITARIAN DICTATORSHIPS: BENITO MUSSOLINI, ADOLF HITLER, & JOSEPH STALIN
The spirit of totalitarianism can be found in its very
name - a form of government characterized by strong
central rule that attempts to enforce total control over
society through harsh means of coercion & repression.
These & several other characteristics were common to
all totalitarian regimes at this time, which made them
appear to be similar on the surface. Beneath this shal-
low surface, however, many ideological differences
existed, which made each system unique.
