WSET D1 - Wine Production
Define photosynthesis. - ANS-Photosynthesis is the system through which green flowers use
sunlight to produce sugars from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water.
Leaves are predominant site of photosynthesis within the vine.
Sugars produced in photosynthesis are used for vine increase and metabolism.
Describe buds. - ANS-Belong to shoot structure.
Form among leaf stalk (petiole) and stem and contains the structure of the inexperienced a part
of the vine in miniature.
2 kinds: Compound/latent bud and Prompt bud.
Describe Lateral shoots. - ANS-
Describe shoots of a vine. - ANS-Major systems: Buds, leaves, tendeils, lateral shoots,
infloresence/grape bunches.
Grow in spring.
Main axis: delivery water and solutes to extraordinary structures and save carbohydrates.
Describe transpiration. - ANS-As water diffuses out of the the open stomata (tiny pores) on the
underside of the leaves, the system referred to as transpiration draws water and vitamins from
the soil up through the vine to the leaves.
Explain compound/latent bud. - ANS-Belong to shoot structure.
Typically number one bud (most important growing point). Produce shoots if retained in the
course of wintry weather pruning. Form in one season and burst in following growing season.
Secondary, tertiary buds in case of damage (spring frost).
Explain activate bud. - ANS-Belong to shoot shape.
Form on primary shoot of compound bud and burst in identical developing season.
Produce lateral shoots.
List the requirements of a vine. - ANS-- sunlight
- water
- CO2
- heat
- nutrients
Name the four sections of the structure of the vine. - ANS-1. Shoots
2. One-12 months-vintage wooden
three. Permanent timber
