Summary Neurotransmitters in Biological Approach

Document preview thumbnail
Vista previa 1 fuera de 1 páginas

This document explains the role of neurotransmitters in the biological approach to psychology, focusing on acetylcholine and its role in memory. The biological approach suggests that behavior and cognitive processes are influenced by biological factors, such as brain structures, hormones, and neurotransmitters. One important neurotransmitter discussed in the document is Acetylcholine, which is involved in learning, memory, and communication between neurons. Acetylcholine plays a key role in the Hippocampus, a brain region responsible for forming new memories and supporting spatial navigation. It helps strengthen connections between neurons through Synaptic Plasticity, which allows synapses to become stronger or weaker over time. This process improves the brain’s ability to encode, store, and retrieve information. The document then describes a study by Elena Antonova and colleagues in 2011. The researchers wanted to examine how acetylcholine affects spatial memory. Overall, the document argues that acetylcholine is essential for memory formation and spatial navigation. The study provides evidence that neurotransmitters directly influence cognitive functions, supporting the biological approach to understanding behavior and memory.

Neurotransmitters in biological approach

One neurotransmitter that plays a significant role in human behavior is acetylcholine, which is
crucial for cognitive functions, particularly memory and learning. Acetylcholine facilitates
communication between neurons, especially in areas of the brain like the hippocampus, which
is involved in the formation of new memories.

Acetylcholine enhances the encoding of memories by promoting synaptic plasticity, which is the
ability of the synapses (connections between neurons) to strengthen or weaken over time,
making it easier to store and retrieve information.

Antonova et al. (2011) aimed to explore the role of acetylcholine in spatial memory by using a
double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment. The researchers recruited 20 healthy male adults
and randomly assigned them to receive either a scopolamine injection (which temporarily
blocks acetylcholine receptors) or a placebo before performing a virtual reality spatial memory
task. The task involved navigating through a virtual maze, where participants were asked to
remember the layout to find a specific pole within the maze.

The participants' brain activity was monitored using functional magnetic resonance imaging
(fMRI) while they performed the task. This allowed the researchers to observe the effects of
scopolamine on the hippocampus, a brain region heavily involved in memory and spatial
navigation.

The results showed that participants who received scopolamine had significantly worse
performance in navigating the maze compared to those who received the placebo. Specifically,
they took longer to find the pole and made more errors in recalling the maze's layout. The fMRI
scans revealed reduced activation in the hippocampus for the scopolamine group, suggesting
that blocking acetylcholine receptors impaired the brain's ability to encode and retrieve spatial
memories.

The study by Antonova et al. (2011) provides strong evidence that acetylcholine is crucial for
the proper functioning of spatial memory. By demonstrating that blocking acetylcholine
receptors with scopolamine leads to poorer memory performance and reduced hippocampal
activity, the study highlights the neurotransmitter's essential role in cognitive processes. This
suggests that acetylcholine facilitates the encoding of spatial information and supports the
retrieval of this information when needed, particularly in tasks that require navigation and
spatial awareness.
