microorganisms as a potential pathogen. Other steps we can take are
sterilizing equipment and materials, disinfect your workarea before
and after a lab, do not eat or drink while working on your lab, wash
hands before and after lab and label everything clearly.

2. What constitutes personal protective equipment? When should
personal protective equipment be worn?
Personal Protective Equipment also kinown as PPE, is equipment for
eyes, face, head, and extremities. PPE also includes protective
clothing, respitory devices, and protective shields and barriers. It is
important to use PPE when risks of health and safety when safety can
not be controlled in other ways.


3. What is meant by “BioSafety Levels”? Why do researchers utilize
these when working with microorganisms? What level of biological
containment (which BSL) will be necessary to complete the
experiments in this course?
BSL, also know as BioSafety Levels are guidelines and practices that
used to ensure the safe handling and containment of organisms in
research laboratories. BioSafety Levels are levels that are designed to
protect both the researcher and the enviornment from potenital
hazards that are associated with working with these organisms.
There are 4 levels of BioSafety Levels but for this course we will be
working with the lowest level which is BioSafety Level 1.

“EXERCISE 1: DATA INTERPRETATION
1. What is the overall goal of this exercise? What learning outcomes is it
trying to convey to you as a science student?
The overall goal of this exercise is for us to understand the pH scale
and how to use the pH scale. This lab exercise is going to help is
assess how acidic or basic a solution is, the pH scale ranges from 0-10.
A lower pH score is seen as more acidic while on the other hand the
higher pH score is more basic.


2. What patterns do you observe based on the information in Table 4?
There is a clear pattern of increasing colony numbers as the acidity
increases from 0-7 until it peaks at pH of 7. Then we see that there is a
sharp decrease in colony numbers as the pH rises and become more
basic.


3. Describe the hypothesis the researcher may have used in the
experiment that provided the data in Table 4. Format your response
as an IF/THEN statement that describes what you will do, and the
outcome you expect to see.
If bacterial growth is affecred by pH, then the same bacteria grown at
different pH levels will show different growth rates with the highest
growth rate at a neutral pH and growth rates falling as pH moves
away from neutral. When comparing to a neutral pH, if the pH is
increased or decreased then bacterial colony growth will decrease.
