1. Kinetoplast
The kinetoplast is a dense DNA-containing structure located inside the single large
mitochondrion, near the base of the flagellum. It contains mitochondrial DNA (kDNA).
The kinetoplast regulates mitochondrial function and energy metabolism. In the
bloodstream form of the parasite, mitochondrial activity is reduced, but the
kinetoplast remains essential for maintaining mitochondrial integrity. This enables
adaptation between the tsetse fly vector and the human host.
2. Nucleus
The nucleus contains the parasite’s genetic material and controls cell division,
metabolism, and protein synthesis.
